Artist Statement

KOTOHOGIとは

３名の異なるジャンルのアーティストが「舞踏」、「書道」、「能楽」、　「ダンス」、「歌」、「語り」、「雅楽太鼓」、 「ループマシーン」を始めとする様々な技術、コンセプト、市民との交流を組み合わせて、現代アート作品として展開するパフォーマンス＆展示作品シリーズ。

　本作品は、デュッセルドルフの「TAIFUN Project」が大阪茨木市とタイアップして、「老い」をテーマに茨木市で発表することを呼びかけ、生まれました。本作品はサイトスペシフィックで、場所、時節、交流などに応じて、テーマも作品内容もゼロから作り込みます。
　
　『KOTOHOGI』は命のめぐりをテーマとします。

　「老い」に対して、西洋社会では死、現代社会では社会問題など限定的なイメージが紐づいていますが、日本古来の言葉、文字、舞、信仰、概念体系において、「老い」は絶えることのない宇宙スケールの生命を示唆します。また伝統芸術や舞踏では、朽ちるものに命の美を見出します。伝統的な芸術や営みが一般的に実践されなくなる一方で、今でいう「持続可能性」は本来、文化的基盤に深く組み込まれています。その世界観を発表先々の「その時、その場所」の人間の営みの中で表現し、観客と作品の境目をなくす演出で、一緒に踊るのが『KOTOHOGI』です。

"KOTOHOGI" Series:

KOTOHOGI manifests this concept in the lives of people at the respective time and site of performance. The production dissolves the delineation between the audience and performers, bringing them all together into the dance and song of KOTOHOGI.

The evolution of a Chinese characters from the word "sound (音)" to "language or words (言)" indicate how "word" was conceived in history as a sound offered to 'gods.' The term KOTOHOGI, as spelled in the Japanese adaptation of Chinese characters (written as 言祝, 呪言 or 寿ぎ) also show how "word" is a form of spell, which humans have the choice of using to positive or negative effects, or even beyond to seek truth in "寿ぎ" the unlimiting life of the universe, whose concept most cultural traditions in Japan are founded upon.

Each edition of KOTOHOGI exposes the human experiences of performers, workshop participants and the audience on site to the above-mentioned possibilities of KOTOHOGI through logogram, lyrics, sound, movement and elements set on stage.

KOTOHOGI an artistically, historically, shamanically, locally and globally informed performative scene of words, singing, music, dancing and visuals set in a public space, where the three artists, Yuko Kaseki, Miho Tsujii and Kanako Sehara, facilitate the audience and guest collaborators to access and release their energies and joys/weight of life, at a primordial level at which point life is pure and un-divisive, on a stage that is framed by the concept of the term KOTOHOGI in Japanese, which the artists deepened based on their extensive research stemmed in respective artist's disciplines, to frame the recirculation of all life in the universe, offering a taste of life beyond any divisive binaries, such as negativity/positivity, prejudice/diversity, war/peace, men/women, minority/majority and death/life.
